The Case of the Elusive Hacker.

It was 11AM on a Saturday Morning
as Sunil drove his Bike into his Uncle's
House.His cousin had phoned him up
some problem with his sister's computer.
Neha was just in her 10th Grade.Sunil
and Anil were both doing there +2.

Sunil entered the house and was led
by Anil into Neha's room.

Sunil "Hai Neha, what is the problem?"

Neha" Hai Sunil, thanks for coming,
Anil you tell him"

Anil " its bizarre we get the feeling
that Neha's computer is hacked ?"

Sunil "why do you say that ?"

Anil "well Neha gets the feeling
her emails are monitored and her
chat ID'S known to others and more"

Neha "I changed all the passwords Sunil
even stopped using some Yahoo ID'S
I hardly chat anyway"

Sunil " what makes you feel that yo uare
hacked ?"

Neha " well.. some of my personal emails in
my inbox ...like some chat guy messaged
me what was in there..."

Sunil "anything personal ? "

Neha " nah nah just some romantic
letters we girls were exchanging .."

Neha" also a Yahoo chat ID I use
a guy messaged me hey Neha ,this
ID no one knows,none of my pals
no one"

Sunil "OK , let me check "

Sunil ran a series of tests Virus scan
spyware scan ,rootkit scan and more.
He checked firewall settings.They had
a hardware firewall linksys Router
and every computer had a software firewall.
All four computers in the House had the
Kaspersky security suite.Wireless
was disabled on the wireless router
all were cable connected.Every computer
was branded Three Dell Desktop's and a Lenovo.
Apart from this one Laptop and two notebooks.


After repeat scanning Sunil realized this was a
pretty hardened setup at home.

Sunil "who has access to these systems ? "

Anil " most of the time its us at home
rarely it is Uncle Aaryan's Kids but they
only play games on my computer,no one
touches Neha's computer "

Sunil " everyone at home logs in using
a limited user account and not the admin
account ?"

Anil " we do everything as you and Bhai

Neha " my friends visit me and I have had
parties at Home but no one has used my
desktop I only show them my laptop
or notebook PC"

Ahh sunil thought ,now we are getting somewhere.

Sunil "In your parties there would have been
around 30 40 People , so its possible for anyone
to come upstairs and access the computers..?"

Neha " yeah maybe.. in a large party.."

Sunil thought Physical access by a stranger
was possible ,well this wasn't a stranger.
