" KISS -KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID "
A Network Admin's Life would be a
lot easier if things were kept as
simple as possible.
Linux Networking
Steps
1.In relation to Windows Networking.
Networks are two types:
Workgroup - Centralized Control or a Server -NO
Domain- Server Centralized Control- Yes
or
Web server , you are a webmin managing
websites through cpanel or webmin
2.Linux Operating Systems I used.
Ubuntu,Fedora .
3. Define Your Goal.
; Are You creating a Small LAN to Share Folders
and Printers.
; Are You creating a Server as in a Windows
Domain to have Centralized Control.
Goals of Networking Share Resources and
Access Control.
Defining Goals would be the most important
Step in any job.
4.
Install either Ubuntu Fedora or Suse or
any other Linux Distro on two PC's,
that is on two hard disks.
If you are dual booting than make sure
you install windows first and than leave
free space on the hard disk ,Linux will
install itself on the free space.
5.
Decide Wired or Wireless Network.
If Wired you need CAT5 or category 5
Cable crimped in the crossover setup.
Google for cable crimping and learn
how to do it, its very simple. Also
maybe use a cable tester.
6.
Revisiting goal's
>share folders/files
>share a print device
>share an internet connection
7.
Now connect the Two PC'S
Via the Cable (or use two
wireless cards, maybe
USB Cards ) and power them up.
8.
Now check your desktop to see if
there is a Network connection Icon.
Remember these are Two freshly installed
Ubuntu or Fedora PC's with a Network
Connection.
9.
Assigning a Static IP to Ubuntu
Assign the IP addresses
192.168.1.1 -PC1
192.168.1.2-PC2
Ping both from Terminal
which is similar to command
prompt in windows.
LINUX Terminal common COMMANDS
10.
Sharing Folders/Files in Ubuntu
11.
Sharing a Printer in Ubuntu
Sharing a Printer in Ubuntu
12.
Sharing Internet.
The Best way to Share Internet
at Home would be to get Linksys
Router like the WRT54G which I
use .The ISP now a days give
Modems with Routing and wireless
capability which makes it very easy
to share the Internet. In the absence
of a Router maybe one could try
the steps in the Ubuntu Forums.
